Protagonists[]
There are eight playable protagonists in Until Dawn, consisting of a group of American friends who attended the same high school and annually visit the Washington Estate in Alberta, Canada for a getaway consisting of partying and general good times. The player will control all of them and follow them on their journey through the night.

A curious academic with a big imagination who loves books and gets scared rather easily.
A methodical and analytical nerd with a tendency to clown around and pull pranks.
A brash and driven fashion lover who uses her smarts to adamantly get her way.
A flirty, airheaded party girl with a larger-than-life personality.
A mysterious, complex film enthusiast who has been struggling to cope with his sisters' disappearance.
A motivated, gentle - yet fiercely protective - young sportsman.
A popular, driven young man who is a fan of women, attention, and taking matters into his own hands.
A pacifist who loves nature, her friends, and is happy acting as the group's mediator.
Supporting Characters[]
There are also multiple supporting characters who appear in the game.
Beth's slightly older twin, younger sister of Josh. A deer in headlights, Hannah comes across as a bit naive - falling in love easily. Has a crush on Mike.
Younger twin sister to Hannah and Josh's little sister. Analytical, attentive and loves her family. The only playable supporting character.
A psychiatrist with a bold personality who appears through the game, guiding the player on their journey.
Jack Fiddler, known as The Stranger, is a mysterious hermit that lives on Blackwood Mountain and follows the group from the shadows.
A wolf that accompanies the The Stranger. He meets Mike on his path.

Antagonists[]
Two main antagonists terrorize the teenagers throughout the game. Spoilers lie below!
A clown-masked 'psychopath' that stalks and torments the group through various Saw-like tests. Later revealed to be a familiar face.
Former humans turned into bloodthirsty monsters through the act of cannibalism, being driven to do so after being possessed by an evil spirit. Inhabiting Blackwood Mountain, the Wendigos are the real antagonists of the game and depending on the actions of the player, the friends will meet their brutal demise at the hands of them. Later, one Wendigo is also revealed to be a familiar face.

- Rather than having a specific meaning associated with them, the names of the teenage protagonists appear to have been selected from lists of the most popular child names of the year 1996. All of their names appear within the top ten most popular, and based on their age in the game, 1996 would've been the year several of them would've been born.[1]
